Level 1 Surprise
There was a lot of chalk in Division 5, with no significant upsets. A trio of the fifth-seeded teams did score victory, however, as Durand-Arkansaw defeated River Valley, Spencer/Columbus Catholic downed New Holstein, and Wittenberg-Birnamwood knocked off Brookfield Academy.
Best Rematch
Third-seeded Saint Croix Falls will travel to second-seeded Northwestern, marking the third consecutive year that the teams will play twice. The previous two seasons, the team that won during the regular season was knocked off in the playoffs. Northwestern is hoping that doesn’t happen this year, as the Tigers put a running on the Saints in a 41-0 decision.
#1 seed with toughest match-up
Top-seeded Mayville beat Winnebago Lutheran 14-7 back in Week 3, but WLA won six straight games since then (seven counting the playoffs) to finish second in the Flyway Conference behind unbeaten Mayville. That was the closest game Mayville has played this year, and their lowest point total of the season. Winnebago Lutheran actually out-rushed the Cardinals in that one.
Level 2 Most Important Player
Jack Hoeper had a big season for Spencer/Columbus Catholic, rushing for 1,729 yards and 23 touchdowns. However, he was largely held in check in the team’s four losses, going for less than 100 yards in three of them. He’ll need to have a good game against top-seeded Tomahawk.
My Picks
(15-1 last week; 93.75% in D5 overall)
Grantsburg over Durand-Arkansaw
Northwestern over Saint Croix Falls
Tomahawk over Spencer/Columbus Catholic
Stratford over Prairie du Chien
Mayville over Winnebago Lutheran
Amherst over Brillion
Lake Country Lutheran over Wittenberg-Birnamwood
Racine Lutheran over New Glarus
