BOUND WISCONSIN WEEK 1 FOOTBALL TEAM OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
Freedom Irish
Freedom shocked highly-ranked Lake Mills 40-0 on Friday night, shutting out an L-Cats team that returned All-State quarterback Tyler Wollin and a strong offensive group. The swarming Freedom defense held Lake Mills to just 150 yards of offense and less than 40% completion rate, with a pair of interceptions as well. Owen Henkel threw a pair of touchdowns while Axzil Eggert ran for three for the Irish.
Hamilton Chargers
Hamilton took down Kimberly for the third time in 12 months, scoring a 27-12 road victory on Thursday. The Chargers also beat Kimberly in Week 1 last year as well as the WIAA playoffs. Cole Erdman had 208 yards of total offense and threw for two scores. Kimberly averaged just 2.5 yards per carry in the game.
Mount Horeb/Barneveld Vikings
Defending Division 3 state champion Grafton went down in the first game of the year, falling 14-10 to Mount Horeb/Barneveld. The Vikings held a narrow 7-0 lead at halftime before stretching it to 14-0 and held on for the win, avenging a Week 1 loss from last season. In his first start, junior quarterback Harvey Hellen completed 13-of-19 passes for 126 yards and a score. Senior Eli Maier ran for 151 yards for the Vikings.
Racine Case Eagles
Racine Case scored its first win over Franklin at least 40 years, taking down the Sabers 20-10. It is a non-conference game after Franklin moves to the Classic Eight Conference this year, but a huge program win for a Case team that has just six playoff appearances in school history. Morell Jackson ran for 119 yards and a score in the win.
Superior Spartans
Superior defeated Eau Claire North 58-28 on Thursday night, ending the Spartans’ 29-game losing streak. Superior had last tasted victory on September 30, 2022 vs. Eau Claire Memorial. In Thursday night’s win, senior running back Maxton Luzaich had a huge game with 304 yards and seven touchdowns on 30 carries.
Travis Wilson serves as the Bound Wisconsin Manager. Wilson was selected as part of the Sports 40 Under 40 list by Coach & AD Magazine and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association for 2019. The Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) named Travis the 2015 recipient of the Dave McClain Distinguished Service Award. He currently serves on the WFCA Executive Board and is a member of the Executive Board of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association. A graduate of Richland Center High School and Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Travis was a three-sport athlete in high school (football, baseball, basketball), inducted to the Richland Center High School Hall of Fame in 2023, and currently resides in Reedsburg.
