Holy big games, Batman.
Things got underway in a big way on Thursday, with a huge showdown in the North Eastern Conference between Little Chute and Luxemburg-Casco. Little Chute secured at least a share of the league title, handing Luxemburg-Casco its first loss of the year 42-27. The Mustangs ran for 361 yards in its flexbone attack.
Friday night was chock full highly competitive, exciting games. Perhaps none more so than the West De Pere versus Bay Port game. Bay Port led early and often, including a 45-28 advantage with less than six minutes remaining in the game. However, buoyed by a pair of onside kick recoveries and an explosive offense, West De Pere made an incredible comeback in a 48-45 win, as senior quarterback Patrick Greisen cemented himself as the Player of the Year frontrunner with 471 passing yards and seven touchdowns.
In another wild comeback, Brookfield East trailed Marquette 21-0 in the fourth quarter, but managed to tie the game and force overtime, where they pulled out an improbable 29-28 victory. With some other results in the Greater Metro, the Spartans are now part of a three-way tie atop the league standings heading into the final week.
One of those results impacting the Greater Metro featured Hamilton in a crossover against Arrowhead. It was yet another tight one, but Arrowhead pulled out a 21-20 victory.
Slinger beat Homestead twice last season en route to a Division 2 state championship, but the Highlanders flipped the script last night, downing Slinger 28-14. Senior running back Connor Pangallo ran for 254 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
It was a top five showdown in Division 5 with the CWC-Large title on the line, and three-time defending state champion Stratford came out on top, defeating Amherst 34-21.
Edgewood stayed unbeaten and took a huge step towards a Badger-Small Conference title with a 27-20 win over Mount Horeb/Barneveld, as it sets the Crusaders up for a number one seed in the D3 playoffs if they take care of business against Sauk Prairie last week.
La Crosse Central lost both non-conference games against Waunakee and Ellsworth, but the Riverhawks have rallied with six straight wins, including a 20-6 win over previously undefeated Holmen. Central can do no worse than a share of the Mississippi Valley Conference title and are looking to close out an outright crown against Onalaska next week.
Aquinas won its 20th straight Coulee Conference game and all but wrapped up another league title with a 20-13 victory against West Salem on Friday night.
There’s a three-way tie atop the Southwest Wisconsin Conference after New Glarus’ 31-30 win over River Valley, with those teams currently tied with Prairie du Chien at 5-1.
Baldwin-Woodville wrapped up at least a share of the Middle Border Conference championship with a dominating 49-21 win over Osceola, who entered Friday night 5-0 in the league as well.
