Practice has begun as of Monday morning and the boys basketball season is officially underway. The first games aren’t until next Tuesday, November 25, but there are a load of players to keep an eye on this season.

This week we’ll roll out pre-season all-state choices, broken down into the 2028, 2027, and 2026 grades. For the senior class (2026), we will list a first team of ten athletes, a second team of five more, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the junior class (2027), we will list a first and second team, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the sophomore class (2028), we will list a first team, and then a number of honorable mentions.

The talent in the state continues to grow, so many good basketball players will be left of these lists.

First Team

(listed alphabetically)

Jalen Brown, Wauwatosa West

Brown is one of a handful of players from the state in the Class of 2027 that aren’t just to players in our state, but are ranked nationally. The 6-4 combo guard can flat out score the ball from anywhere on the court. His combination of size, speed, and skill make him near impossible to guard with just one defender. He was able to showcase that ability in front of the state last season at the Kohl Center, and also on the club circuit where his spring and summer seasons added to his ever growing offer list from Division 1 programs.

Jack Kohnen, Slinger

What was said about Brown can also be stated about Kohnen, a national ranked recruit that is a part of the incredibly talented junior class. Jack is a 6-6 small forward with a handful of Division 1 high major programs and will likely continue to garner more over the next two years. Kohnen can do it all, score near the rim, in the mid-range, and from deep. He’s a matchup nightmare and has an ever evolving game that allows him to completely take over segments of games at any time.

Eli Krueger, McFarland

Krueger had a good club season this spring/summer as he continues to get attention from college coaches. Krueger is a strong forward that runs the floor like a gazelle, but battles in the post like an ox. His outside game continues to grown while his play around the rim and rebounding ability are above average. The Spartans will be players in the Badger-Small and all of Division 2 this season, thanks in part to the progression of Krueger. He holds a handful of Division 1 and 2 offers, including from in-state Green Bay.

Deuce McDuffie, Nicolet

McDuffie is another one of those players in the Class of 2027 that is on national radars. This season he will suit up for Nicolet after spending his freshman and sophomore years at Milwaukee King. The 6-6 wing is a bona fide bucket getter and above average rebounder from his position on the perimeter. He’s got length, good handles, and knows how to change his pace with the ball in his hands that lulls opposing defenders to sleep. McDuffie has a number of Division 1 offers including Wisconsin.

Dustin Roach, Catholic Memorial

Roach is an exceptional multi-sport athlete as he’ll have opportunities to play both basketball and football at the next level, most recently receiving a scholarship offer from the Wisconsin football team. As a sophomore last season he was a first team all-conference selection after averaging 11.7 points per game. He’s a hard nosed defender as well that with his mix of size and strength makes him extremely versatile in his ability to guard almost every position on the court.

Second Team

Edward Bullock, Nicolet

Bullock has taken big steps forward over the past few years, and shooting up in height sure helps on the court. The now 6-3 guard has earned an offer from Division 1 Eastern Illinois. Playing alongside Rashaad Davis and Deuce McDuffie will allow Bullock isolation opportunities with expanded space to work this season.

Jayce Cook, New Berlin West

One of the top shooters in the state, Cook can light up the box score in a hurry if he gets hot. Give him an inch and he’ll bury a 30-footer before you can close the gap. His unique shooting form works well in his ability to get shots up from different angles and catch positions.

Quinn Gerke, Tomah

Gerke is relentless in his approach on the basketball court. He attacks the rim with a purpose, gets to the line at a high clip, but also can score in the pick and roll however the defense allows. The 6-3 guard is 20 points shy of 1,000 in his career as he’s one of the top returning scorers in the junior class. Gerke is slighter of frame, but does a good job of leveraging that to get the position he seeks on the court

Colin Julien, Whitefish Bay

Whitefish Bay will be a team to watch in the North Shore conference this season and Julien’s progression over the offseason is a big reason why. His skill set expansion has led to offers from Menlo College, Michigan Tech, and Northern Michigan. I’d expect 2025-26 to be the season where he comes out to a larger audience with his school team

Gavin Valeri, Milwaukee Academy of Science

Valeri will get the opportunity to step into a larger role like many of his teammates at Milwaukee Academy of Science this season with the graduation of the uber-talented 2025 class. The 6-2 combo guard has good lank in his frame and has showcased the ability to score off the bounce, in the mid-range, and from beyond the ark.

Honorable Mentions: Caleb Battles, Grafton; Marion Boyland, Milwaukee Academy of Science; Jack Broderson, Whitefish Bay; D’Anthony Brown, Milwaukee Academy of Science; Alex Chapman, Mount Horeb; Garrett Crull, McFarland; Austin & AJ Hendricks, Notre Dame; Zach Hewitt, New Berlin West; Justin Jones, Pius XI Catholic; Kason Mangum, Wauwatosa West; Carter Rivas, Baraboo; Trevor Robert, Menomonie; Gave Servais, La Crosse Central; Jude Siikarla, Slinger; McKhale Wesley, Shorewood; Isaiah Yuenger, Beaver Dam
