The Green Bay Packers have announced that Jason Bins of Seymour High School in Seymour, Wis., has been named the Packers High School Coach of the Week.
In his fourth season at the helm, Bins has the Seymour Thunder out to a 6-1 start. It marks the program’s second consecutive season opening with that record – an impressive turnaround for a team that won just three games total in Bins’ first two years as head coach. The Thunder now sit tied atop the Bay Conference and are ranked ninth among all Division 4 programs statewide, according to the latest Bound Wisconsin Coaches Poll. Bins’ emphasis on steady growth and his commitment to honoring the program’s past have been key drivers behind Seymour’s resurgence.
“This just really shows where our kids have been,” Bins said. “When [my staff] took over four years ago, our first season, we went 0-9 and we had the struggles of an 0-9 program. To where we are now, getting that state-wide recognition, playing in playoff games…it means growth in our program and that’s the biggest thing.”
Bins places great importance on maintaining the proud standards established by those who came before him. He’s especially grateful for the chance to get to know former Seymour head coach Bill Collar, a Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame member whose legacy continues to be upheld today.
Coach Bins also takes pride in his football program giving back to the community and building character in the process. “We talk about showing good character a lot and I know there’s a lot of people that talk about it, but we try really hard to do it,” he said. “Most of our kids will be out helping to coach Seymour youth flag football and giving back to our program. Every August we do a Community Heroes Picnic where our program serves and honors EMTs, firefighters, police officers, first responders, active military and veterans. This is just one way we can give back to the community and just say thank you.”
A Green Bay native, Bins graduated from Luxemburg-Casco High School in 2004, where he played center and defensive tackle for the Spartans under head coach Pete Kline. He continued his education at Lakeland University, earning his degree in 2008. Bins’ coaching career began at Lakeland as a student assistant before he accepted an assistant coaching position at Howards Grove High School. In 2009, he stepped into his first head coaching role at Siren High School, later taking over as head coach at Freedom High School. Following his time in Freedom, Bins served as an assistant coach at Ashwaubenon, Appleton Xavier and Green Bay Preble before being named Seymour’s head coach in 2022.
Bins is honored to win the Coach of the Week award but is quick to give credit to everyone involved in the program.
“This is a program award for us. Coaching staff, players, former coaches and players,” Bins said. “Everyone that has or has had a hand in our program, it’s their award. Without all our people around, we don’t look successful. This is about US and all the things WE do here.”
Bins and his staff oversee a program of 48 players with 36 of them suiting up for varsity games. His assistant staff includes Nate Gerhardt, Mathew Dessart, Jeff Marsh, Joe Schuh, Jeremy Schuh, Tyler VanDeHei, and Brett VanRossum. In addition to coaching, Bins is a school counselor at Freedom Middle School.
