Back on Track
Kimberly lost to Sussex Hamilton in Week 1, and was in danger of losing two regular season games in the same season for the first time in 20 years, but the Papermakers got back on track with an impressive 23-7 win over top-ranked and defending Division 1 state champion Bay Port. The running game put up 223 yards on the ground, led by 130 yards on just 11 carries by junior Maddux Hermus.
Mukwonago lost to Appleton North last week but rebounded with a dominating win over Sun Prairie East, 40-3.
Saint Mary’s Springs got the first win in the post-Bob Hyland era and first for head coach Zach Wilderman with a 28-14 victory over Oconto Falls.
After a frustrating 14-13 loss to Neenah to begin the year, Muskego found the win column in Week 2, taking down old Southeast Conference rival Oak Creek 41-17. Jackson Niemiec went for 138 rushing yards for the Warriors.
Catholic Memorial dropped a close one against Franklin to open the year, but still ranked first in the initial Division 3 Coaches Poll. In Week 2 they took down Sun Prairie West 30-7 behind a big performance from sophomore first-year starting quarterback Dalton Steinke, who completed 10-of-16 passes for 215 yards and three scores.
Mount Horeb/Barneveld fell convincingly to Grafton in Week 1, but the Vikings got back on the right side of things in Week 2, defeating Monroe 26-6. Senior North Dakota State linebacker commit Jack Wilson showed his chops running the ball, going for 194 yards on the ground.
Rivalry Results
It was a busy week for some of the most-played rivalries in the state of Wisconsin. Below are results of the games that have been contested at least 75 times.
Menominee (MI) took down Marinette 49-13 in the famous M&M Game, which was first played in 1894 and a total of 119 times. Menominee (MI) leads that series 61-51-7.
Chippewa Falls defeated Eau Claire 33-6 in the 116th meeting between the teams, though Eau Claire Memorial still leads the all-time series 69-43-5 dating back to 1898.
In the Marsh Bowl, Mayville had no problems with Horicon/Hustisford, 62-0, running Mayville’s lead against Horicon to 67-18-4 in 89 meetings.
Hurley defeated Ironwood (MI) 28-14 in the 86th meeting between the neighboring communities in different states. Ironwood still leads the all-time series 48-35-3.
Jefferson defeated Fort Atkinson 41-6, as the teams have now played 82 times, with Fort holding a 49-27-6 advantage still.
Winneconne kept the China Bull Trophy with a 50-0 win over Omro in Week 2. It was the 77th meeting between the teams, as Winneconne leads 43-33-1 dating back to 1948.
New Glarus held off Belleville 10-6, marking the 76th time the teams have faced off, with New Glarus holding a 43-31-2 advantage.
Other Impressive Victories
West De Pere is red-hot to open the 2025 season, with a 33-9 win over Kaukauna last night moving the Phantoms to 2-0, while Kaukauna drops to 0-2.
Badger lost two close games against eventual D2 champion Slinger last season, including the state semi-final game. The Badgers made a statement from the outset on Friday night, putting a running clock on the Owls in a 56-17 victory that was utter domination from the beginning.
Spencer/Columbus Catholic defeated Pittsville 49-34 on Friday night, as senior Jack Hoeper had a huge game, rushing for 441 yards and seven touchdowns on 33 carries.
Kenosha Bradford made a big statement on Thursday night with a 27-17 win over a very good Appleton North team that had just defeated Mukwonago.
These teams have become fast rivals with multiple non-conference and playoff matchups in recent seasons, and each were ranked in the Division 4 top five coming into Week 2. But it was third-ranked Aquinas that outlasted fifth-ranked Columbus 34-13 on Friday night.
In perhaps the best small school rivalry in the state, D6 top-ranked Edgar defeated defending Division 5 state champion Stratford 14-0 on Friday night. Stratford, who has won three straight titles overall, is now 0-2 to begin the season.
Grafton already owns wins over a pair of other top ten teams in Division 3, first beating Mount Horeb/Barneveld last week and following that up with a 28-3 win against Port Washington last night.
Grantsburg moved to 2-0 on the season with a 46-30 win over Saint Croix Falls in a showdown of ranked teams in northwest Wisconsin. Senior quarterback Brock Matheny threw for 322 yards and four touchdowns.
Arrowhead stayed hot, following up a dominating Week 1 over Marquette with a hard-fought 16-13 decision over Neenah, who had defeated Muskego last week.
Sussex Hamilton followed up a big win over Kimberly in Week 1 with another win over a solid club, defeating improving Racine Case 20-12.
Oconomowoc is trying to show that last year’s co-conference championship in the Classic Eight was no fluke, starting 2-0 this year after wins over Pulaski and last night over Verona 13-7. The Wildcats of Verona are now 0-2.
Fond du Lac started 0-5 last year against a brutally tough schedule, but things are going much better in the early part of 2025 for the Cardinals. After a win over Hartford in Week 1, Fondy moved to 2-0 with a 17-3 victory against Marquette, who drops to 0-2.
Franklin is 2-0 with a pair of wins over ranked teams. First, the Sabers beat D3 top-ranked Catholic Memorial last week. In Week 2, they had no problem with D2 8th-ranked Brookfield Central, 42-14. Both Rob Beglinger and Dillon Herling went over 100 rushing yards for the Sabers, while Keegan Best had a nice game throwing the football as well.
Weyauwega-Fremont has a pair of the most impressive wins among small schools this year, beating South Central Conference champion Berlin in Week 1, then defeating D7 5th-ranked Iola-Scandinavia 36-14 last night.
