Kickers are like lawyers…
Former Green Bay Packers executive and NFL commentator Andrew Brandt frequently says, “Kickers are like lawyers; never truly appreciated until you need a good one.”
In a replacement game, Division 6 top-ranked Edgar downed Marquette Academy (IL) 9-6 in a neutral site game at DeForest High School, as Anthony Trawicki booted a 24-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to provide the final margin.
Edgar’s old rival Stratford also won via a game-winning field goal, as Declan Fisher connected on a 27-yard field goal in overtime for the walk-off victory, 16-13 over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.
It was a longer game-winner for Waterford’s Beau Veit, who made a 45-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Wolverines to a 24-21 win over Wilmot in a Southern Lakes Conference game.
Other Impressive Games
On Thursday night, Oshkosh North made a big statement with a 47-13 win over Menasha, showing they can be a contender in the FRCC-South. Bryce Ott threw for 216 yards and four touchdowns, as the Spartans will likely head into the final two games of the year against Sheboygan North and Notre Dame undefeated.
Arrowhead kept on rolling, as the top-ranked Warhawks beat up on D3 #7 Pewaukee 47-7 on Friday night, with senior running back Jacob Siner rushing for 201 yards and four touchdowns. The team has a brutally tough schedule continuing, with games against Muskego, Oconomwoc, and Hamilton in the next three weeks.
Brookfield East was coming off a big win over Hamilton last week and had jumped into the top five of the Bound Wisconsin Division 1 Coaches Poll. Friday was much different for the Spartans, as Germantown pulled away in the second half for a 36-3 victory.
Hudson was just outside the top ten in last week’s Coaches Poll, but the Raiders are likely to make a move into the rankings this week after a 24-21 win over D2 #4 New Richmond in a huge Big Rivers Conference showdown.
In his first action of the year, Milwaukee Hamilton running back Latayvious Brown made a splash, rushing 22 times for 374 yards and six touchdowns plus a 70-yard kick return touchdown as the Wildcats defeated Milwaukee Riverside 72-54.
Mukwonago handed Oconomowoc its first loss of the year, 35-6 on Friday night. After two weeks of Classic Eight Conference play, the Indians are tied with Muskego and Arrowhead at 2-0.
Reedsburg rebounded from a loss to La Crosse Central last week with a 47-14 win at Onalaska, forcing four turnovers and dominating on the ground.
Lakeland’s outstanding season continues, as the T-Birds move to 4-0 with a 24-20 win over Mosinee, holding off a late charge from the Indians.
The North Eastern Conference race got a lot more interesting this week. Last year’s league champion Freedom was taken down by Little Chute 17-7, while runner-up (and state runner-up) Wrightstown also went down to Luxemburg-Casco 21-3.
Ripon is making headway in Andrew Selgrad’s second year at the helm, and the Tigers beat Wisconsin Dells 42-34 on Friday night behind 336 yards and four touchdown by senior running back Eric Cumber, who leads the state in rushing this season, pending additional results this weekend.
Grantsburg handed Cadott its first loss of the year in a showdown of ranked Lakeland Conference squads, 36-0.
Northwestern finished second in the Heart O’North Conference last year behind Saint Croix Falls, but the Tigers had no trouble with the Saints Friday night in a 41-0 shutout victory.
