Rivalry Week

It was a big week for rivalry games, with five matchups on the schedule that have been played at least 100 times, including the state’s most-played football rivalry. In the 138th meeting beteween neighbors Reedsburg and Baraboo, it was the Beavers from Reedsburg who dominated from the beginning, putting a running clock on the Thunderbirds in the first en route to a 49-7 victory. Reedsburg ran for 446 yards on 34 carries in the 138th matchup contested for the Old River Jug, as the Beavers now hold a 67-65-6 advantage in the series all-time.

Marshfield still trails the all-time series with Wisconsin Rapids 68-42-4, but the Tigers scored a 24-13 win over the Raiders on Friday night in the 1414th meeting between the Wisconsin Valley Conference rivals.

River Falls handed Hudson its first loss of the season, 44-21, on Friday night behind 472 yards of offense. It was the 108th meeting between the teams, as River Falls now holds a 57-51 lead in the series.

Up in the northwoods, Rhinelander wasn’t a very nice host, dominating Antigo 54-8 in the 104th matchup between the schools, though Antigo still leads 66-35-3.

Beaver Dam had no trouble with Watertown on Friday, downing the Goslings 35-7 in a game that finished in a running clock. Dating back to 1904, Watertown still holds a 57-44-3 lead in 104 meetings.

In a bonus rivalry game, the Battle for Sheboygan went the way of Sheboygan North in a 28-0 victory over Sheboygan South. Played every year since 1938, South holds a 44-41-3 advantage in 88 meetings.

Other Impressive Games

Lodi handed Lake Mills its first loss of the season, 24-7, as the Blue Devils controlled the game on the ground (279 yards on 41 carries) and kept the explosive L-Cats offense in check.

An other previously unbeaten top five team to fall in Week 6 was Tomahawk, the fifth-ranked team in Division 5 entering the week. However, Mosinee spoiled things with a 21-14 victory over the Hatchets, with Treve Stoffel completing 13-of-17 passes for 236 yards and two scores.

In a showdown of previously unbeaten top ten Dairyland Conference teams, Cochrane-Fountain City won a thriller over Pepin/Alma 15-14.

Combined with Hudson’s loss to River Falls, Rice Lake’s 26-23 win over New Richmond leaves the Warriors as the only team unbeaten in Big Rivers Conference play. Rice Lake is now 6-0 overall.

Franklin and Kenosha Bradford were both unbeaten entering Week 6, but it was all Sabers on Friday night in a 35-0 victory, as they take control of the Southeast Conference once again.

In an excellent Friday afternoon game, Black Hawk/Warren (IL) held off a tough challenge from Wauzeka-Steuben/Seneca 14-7, as all the scoring took place in the second quarter. Both teams were unbeaten coming into the contest.

Mount Horeb/Barneveld left no doubt as to the top team in the Badger-Small Conference, hammering Sauk Prairie 57-24 on Friday night. The Vikings threw for 240 yards and ran for 299 in the dominating victory.

Neenah rallied to defeat Appleton North 29-27, scoring 22 straight points after going down early on. The Rockets remain undefeated in the FVA, setting the stage for a huge showdown against Kimberly next week.

Mayville reaffirmed its dominance in the Flyway Conference with a 35-0 running clock win over Saint Mary’s Springs, dominating the ground game with 324 yards on 53 carries in the Wing-T offense.
