Ranked Matchups Live Up To The Hype
There weren’t a lot for upsets in Week 7, but we did have several matchups between ranked teams, and those certainly lived up to the hype.
Division 1 fourth-ranked Arrowhead and tenth-ranked Mukwonago went into overtime after tying at 20 in regulation. After Mukwonago converted a field goal on the first possession of the extra period, Arrowhead scored on a Jacob Siner touchdown run to walk it off 26-23. Siner finished with 251 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries for the Warhawks.
Neenah and Kimberly were locked in a defensive battle all night, but Neenah was just a little better, finding its way to a 7-0 victory. It is the first time since 2005 that Kimberly has lost more than one regular season game. Neenah is alone atop the FVA standings with games against Fond du Lac and Hortonville remaining.
Mondovi and Regis were back and forth all game, and Mondovi was in good shape at the end until a Hail Mary was answered for Regis, with Joey Brahmer finding 6’5” Griffin Boda at the goal line from 36 yards out on the game’s final play, as Regis scored a dramatic 27-22 win.
River Falls handed Rice Lake its first loss of the season, 40-28 on Friday night in a key Big Rivers Conference game. It was another big offensive performance for River Falls, with 197 rushing yafrds by Joseph Tarasewicz, 222 passing yards and three touchdowns for quarterback Tino Massa, and seven receptions for 134 yards and three scores from receiver Mason Novak. There’s now a three-way tie atop the Big Rivers between Rice Lake, River Falls, and Hudson.
In an excellent small school game, Potosi/Cassville defeated Wauzeka-Steuben/Seneca 33-27, a second straight one-score defeat to highly ranked Division 7 teams for W-S/S, who also fell to Black Hawk/Warren 14-7 last week. It is almost certain that Potosi/Cassville and Black Hawk/Warren will enter their Week 9 showdown unbeaten.
Columbus, ranked fourth in Division 4, won a shootout with Lake Mills, the tenth-ranked Division 4 team, on Friday night 41-35.
One of the few ranked matchups that wasn’t a close game saw D6 #3 Darlington hammer Division 4 ninth-ranked Lodi 38-0 in a non-conference replacement game.
Other Impressive Games
Green Bay East knocked off Sheboygan North 14-7 on Friday. The Red Devils have games remaining against winless Manitowoc Lincoln and a struggling Green Bay West team, as East stands a good chance to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
The Battle for Brookfield was dominated by Brookfield East, who defeated Brookfield Central 27-3 as senior Zeke Sawall threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
Waunakee had no trouble with Sun Prairie East on Friday, defeating the Cardinals 41-7 to maintain a stranglehold on the Badger-Large Conference.
