8-Player: South 22, North 18
For a time, it seemed that the North squad would pull away, and the group was in control the majority of the game, but a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns in a span of three minutes lifted the South to a 22-18 come from behind victory in the WFCA 8-Player All-Star Game.
Relying heavily on the running game, the North team got on the board on its first drive of the game when Dawson Moulton (McDonell Central) plunged in from five yards out. However, the conversion failed, something that would be a recurring theme during the contest, much to the North team's chagrin.
After forcing a three and out, the North scored on its next drive of the game as well, as quarterback Cole Schley (Flambeau) snuck in from a yard out to pay off a 10-play, 87 yard drive earlin the second quarter. Once again, however, the conversion failed.
Having dominated things to that point, including a 159-1 advantage in offensive yards, it seemed the North was on the verge of putting the game away early. However, the South found its rhythm, and posted a much-needed scoring drive on its next possession.
Logan Schuh (Sevastopol) found Kaden Washa (Highland) for a 15-yard touchdown pass, and while the conversion was no good, it pulled the South within 12-6, where it would stay heading into halftime.
Once again, the North team started hot, forcing a three and out by the South to begin the second half. A 10-play, 84 yard drive was capped by a seven-yard touchdown from Dawson Moulton (McDonell Central), putting the team in front 18-6 after a failed conversion.
The game flipped quickly early in the fourth quarter, as the South went on a lengthy touchdown drive, finished off with a one-yard run from Max Peterson (Lena). Bryce Schultz (Highland) went in for the conversion.
The North would fumble the ensuing kickoff, and just a couple minutes later, Logan Schuh (Sevastopol) scored on a one yard run, and Schultz added another conversion to put the South up 22-18.
The North team had two more possessions as they tried to regain the lead, but after a quick three and out on their first opportunity, they found themselves in a fourth and six situation with about two minutes remaining. The South defense rose to the occasion, getting a stop to take over. They were able to convert a first down on a North offside penalty and kneel out the final seconds.
The South was limited to just 158 yards of offense, but they made it count. Logan Schuh (Sevastopol) led with 35 rushing yards and a score. He also had 35 passing yards with another touchdown. Kaden Washa was the leading receiver, hauling in two passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. Cullen Jacobus (North Crawford) led the team with 15 total tackles.
In the loss, the North team ran for 300 yards, higlighted by 129 and a score from Cole Schley (Flambeau) and 116 yards and a score by Dawson Moulton (McDonell Central). Schley had the only completion of the game, an eight-yarder to Moulton. Elijah Stepp (McDonell Central) was the leading tackler with eight total stops.
Small Schools: North 41, South 0
It was domination from the outset, as the North scored on its first drive and never looked back in a 41-0 victory over the South in the WFCA Small School All-Star Game.
While they gained just 209 yards of offense, the North liitted the South to only 55, and scored 21 points off turnovers, including a pick-six just before halftime.
The North marched 53 yards in five plays on its opening possession, which saw Carson Roemhild (Boyceville) find Kaden Yaeger (Wittenberg-Birnamwood) for a 30 yard touchdown.
It was only a few minutes later, after a South punt snap sailed over the punter's head and the North got possession at the three yard line, that Brett Paulsen (Kewaunee) found Logan Prall (Waupun) for the first of two touchdown connections on the day.
Roemhild connected with Brady Everts (Baldwin-Woodville) in the second quarter, and the North all but wrapped it up just before halftime when Connor Kilgore (Kewaunee) intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to give the North a 27-0 advantage at halftime.
Paulsen went in for a nine-yard touchdown in teh third quarter, and Roemhild connected with Prall to open the fourth to close out the scoring for the North team.
Romehild completed seven-of-eight passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns, playing for his uncle Michael the head coach, and father Brian, an assistant. Justin Bergmann (Pepin/Alma) was the leading rusher for the North with 39 yards. Logan Prall caught three passes for 32 yards and two scores, while Brody Everts hauled in a pair of passes for a team-high 47 yards.
Brady Dosch (Richland Center) was the leading rusher for the South squad, going for 20 yards on four carries. Gannon Bagstad (Edgewood) threw for 45 yards, while also catching a pass for 34 yards.
Large Schools: South 24, North 17
The Large School WFCA All-Star Game saw a big comeback yet no scoring in the fourth quarter, though was very much in the balance until the final seconds. After trailing 17-7, the South team scored the final 17 points of the game and took down the North team 24-17 to close out the weekend.
It was the South that got on the board first, with Quintyn Martinez (Union Grove) plunging in from a yard out late in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Tino Massa (River Falls) found Will Svendsen (Rice Lake) on a Big Rivers Conference connection, resulting in a 63-yard touchdown. Later in the second quarter, following a Jonathon Ananiadis (Stevens Point) interception, Ryan Lutz (West De Pere) found his way into the end zone from a yard out.
The North stretched the lead to two scores with just under two minutes remaining in the first half when Kavanaugh Weyenberg (Kaukauna) connected on a 26-yard field goal, though it proved to be the final points of the game for the North squad.
The South team got a big lift heading into halftime when Brady Melum (Sun Prairie East) was good on a field goal from 26 yards out with 18 seconds left. It was a payoff for a drive that went 50 yards and saw 11 plays ran in just 1:26.
When the South got a 12-yard touchdown pass from Joey Passaglia (Middleton) to Jackson BeBow (Burlington) with 2:16 left in the third quarter, the game was tied at 17, though it wouldn't stay that way long.
A quick three and out by the North gave the South excellent field position, and Vidal Spivey (New Berlin Eisenhower) scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown on a 24-yard run with four seconds left in the third quarter, as the North went ahead 24-17.
What the fourth quarter lacked in points it made up for in excitement, especially on the final North drive of the game. Taking over at the South 38-yard line with 3:35 remaining in the game, several negative plays and penalties resulted in a third and 30 situation. It appeared the North had somehow done the miraculous, as Tino Massa hit Zach Shipman (Eau Claire North) for what was initially thought to be a touchdown, however a penalty flag was thrown on Shipman for going out of bounds and being the first to touch. Massa was sacked on the ensuing play, setting up a fourth and 49 do-or-die situation, and a final desperation pass fell incomplete, as the South was able to take a knee on the final play of the game.
Vidal Spivey (New Berlin Eisenhower) was the leading rusher for the South with 42 yards and a touchdown. Joey Passaglia (Middleton) had a nice day throwing the ball, completing 13-of-22 passes for 102 yards and a score. Jackson BeBow (Burlignton) and Tyler Deer (Grafton) each caught five passes for 38 yards.
Quarterback Vinny Inga (Germantown) led the North with 36 rushing yards on nine carries. Bryce Ott (Oshkosh North) completed nine-of-16 passes for 103 yards, while Tino Massa (River Falls) threw for 111 yards and a score. Zach Shipman (Eau Claire North) caught a team-high four passes for 38 yards, while Mason Novak (River Falls) had 43 yards receiving on two catches.
