We’re a little over two months out from the basketball season beginning on the boys side with the first day of practices set for Monday, November 16. As I did last year, I’ll be rolling out a pre-season all-state team for each

Over the next few weeks we’ll roll out pre-season all-state choices, broken down into the 2027, 2028, and 2029 grades. For the senior class (2027), we will list a first team of ten athletes, a second team of five more, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the junior class (2028), we will list a first and second team, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the sophomore class (2029), we will list a first team, and then a number of honorable mentions. Number of athletes per class will vary.

The talent in the state continues to grow, so many good basketball players will be left of these lists.

Below is my preseason all-state team for the Class of 2029 in Division 2.

First Team

(listed alphabetically)

Karti Calvert, Catholic Memorial

Calvert was an integral piece to the Catholic Memorial varsity team as a freshman a year ago and earned honorable mention all-conference honors in the grueling Classic Eight conference. Playing against some of the best in the state, the 6-6 forward excelled against the tough competition. He’s physically ahead of most in his class and pairs a solid skillset to back it up. Calvert’s continual development are a big reason why he’s considered one of the best in the state in the Class of 2029 and poised for a big season with Catholic Memorial this upcoming season.

Logan “Bear” Collins, Wauwatosa West

Collins averaged 10.8 points per game for one of the best Division 2 schools last season Wauwatosa West and competing in one of the toughest conferences, the Greater Metro. The 5-10 guard is shifty with the ball in his hands and is a true playmaker in the one on one and pick and roll. Defensively he causes headaches with his lateral quickness, instincts, and hand speed. He continues to improve in other aspects of his game and it’s resulted in him receiving his first D1 offer from Milwaukee earlier this fall.

Reed McGivern, Wauwatosa West

McGivern averaged 10.4 points while playing at Dominican last season as a freshman. He now is at Wauwatosa West and provides coach Newbauer one of, if not the, best sophomore duo in the state. He is a crafty 6-1 guard that can knock down shots from beyond the arc at a high rate. McGivern is a competitor and doesn’t back down from any sort of challenge on the court.

McCoy Monson, New Richmond

Monson is the top returning scorer in Division 2 in the Class of 2029 having averaged 13.6 points per game for New Richmond last season. He was a Big Rivers honorable mention all-conference selection. He buried 53 triples at a 37% clip last season and can knock down shots off the catch and shoot but also create scoring opportunities for himself and others.

Ben Pritzl, DeForest

Pritzl filled box scores as a freshman last year at DeForest, averaging 11.5 points 5.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, earning Badger Large honorable mention all-conference honors. A strong base and understanding of the game gives Pritzl an advantage in most instances on the court and will only propel him to where he wants to get over the next three years. He plays beyond his years and he and Jayden Doedens are going to be enjoyable to watch the next two seasons in DeForest.

Gibran Spector, Wauwatosa East

Spector is a skilled guard that has only shot up boards over the past year. As a freshman he saw varsity minutes and averaged 3.6 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. The 6-4 lefty has all the tools to be a big time contributor for the Red Raiders this upcoming year. He plays with a controlled pace to the game that when he does turn it on, is extremely difficult to defend.

Honorable Mentions: CJ Bogdanovich, Slinger; Landon Brown, Rice Lake; Zane Crow, Mount Horeb; Hank Doyle, Grafton; Ethan Foemmel, Marshfield; Xavier John, Menasha; Will McCormick, New Berlin Eisenhower; Samaji Pruitt, Martin Luther; Bryce Skemp, Milton; Brady Uelmen, DeForest
