We’re a little over two months out from the basketball season beginning on the boys side with the first day of practices set for Monday, November 16. As I did last year, I’ll be rolling out a pre-season all-state team for each

Over the next few weeks we’ll roll out pre-season all-state choices, broken down into the 2027, 2028, and 2029 grades. For the senior class (2027), we will list a first team of ten athletes, a second team of five more, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the junior class (2028), we will list a first and second team, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the sophomore class (2029), we will list a first team, and then a number of honorable mentions. Number of athletes per class will vary.

The talent in the state continues to grow, so many good basketball players will be left of these lists.

Below is my preseason all-state team for the Class of 2028 in Division 3.

First Team

(listed alphabetically)

Owen Birschbach, New Holstein

Birschbach is a grinder in the gym, working at his game continually and it shows when he steps on the floor. In two seasons he’s scored 818 points, including averaging 18.2 points per game a season ago, along with 8.1 rebounds. The 6-5 forward has plenty of lank in his frame which allows him versatility on defense, where he can get in lanes and also effect shots in and around the rim. Offensively Birschbach does most of his damage near the rim, but has improved his shot over the past two seasons.

Nolan Bork, Adams-Friendship

Bork and fellow classmate Caleb Decorah are a nightmare duo for opposing teams every single night. Bork stars in the role as the scoring point guard that can put up 30+ on any night, but also willingly facilitates to his teammates. He averaged 17.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists as a sophomore and his impact on the game can be felt in all three of those phases. Bork is the son of head coach Keith Bork and his IQ and leadership are two qualities that don’t show up in the box score that add to his overall impact.

Jordan Krause, Seymour

Krause is a lights out shooter that has a competitive edge to him. This helped him be an integral piece to the state runner-up Thunder as a just a sophomore. Last season he averaged 11.5 points and 2.9 assists per game while knocking down 73 triples at a 46.8% clip. The 6-1 guard does the little things that don’t necessarily show up on the stat sheet at the end of the game. Krause hustles after loose balls, rotates on defense, and has the intangibles all coaches pine for in a player.

Jase Navis, Mauston

Navis is one of the top players in the state in the Class of 2028. At 6-7 he’s still growing into his frame, adding strength year after year. Navis is a three level scorer, with an improving game from beyond the arc. He’s extremely comfortable in the post and mid-post where he has great touch on his fadeaway. He rebounds at a high clip and with his added strength continues to dominate games in and around the rim. Navis averaged 20.5 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists a season ago and has already eclipsed 1,000 points in his prep career.

Taylor Williamson, Milwaukee School of Languages

Williamson is short in stature (5-8) but tall in terms of skill and confidence. He’s lightning quick and has great ball skills and vision as he attacks would-be defenders. Williamson can finish in a handful of ways around the rim and has a knack for getting the ball in the hoop despite taller defenders contesting his shot. On top of his offensive skillset, Williamson is a pesky defender that uses his lower leverage to get in on ball handlers and create steals and deflections. As a sophomore a season ago he averaged 17.5 points per game.

Second Team

Blake Bradley, Ripon

Bradley has been a volume scorer during his freshman and sophomore seasons at Ripon, having scored over 900 career points up to this point. As a sophomore he averaged 19.4 points and 6.2 rebounds to earn South Central honors. The 6-2 forward buried 73 triples last year but can effect games inside the arc just the same with his scoring and rebound abilities.

Caleb Decorah, Adams-Friendship

Decorah can score the ball, plain and simple. As a sophomore he led Friendship in scoring at 20.2 points per game and playing off teammate Nolan Bork, he gets more scoring opportunities. The 6-4 wing is versatile, can score at all three levels, and has extended his range from deep.

Talon Fabian, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau

Fabian plays with the utmost confidence when he steps onto the basketball court. He is unafraid to go at defenders that may have a size or quickness advantage over him. Fabian can square up a defender on ball and score that way, or is equally skilled at moving off the ball and prepping for his shot. As a sophomore he averaged 16.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists for a Red Hawks team that came one game short of the state tournament.

Kaeden King, Messmer

King is another scoring option for Messmer that can really get it going. As a sophomore he earned Midwest Classic second team all-conference honors as he averaged 14.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. The 6-2 guard is versatile in his effect on a game. He can shoot it from deep, put defenders on skates, and is relentless on both ends of the floor.

Mario Romo, North Fond du Lac

Romo is a crafty guard that has a good wiggle to him when working in the one-on-one. As a sophomore he averaged 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds and was a second team all-Flyway selection. Romo is 6-5, versatile, and effects games at both ends with his length and instincts.

Westin Zavatchin, Oostburg

Zavatchin will have the opportunity to step into a much bigger role in 2026-27 with the graduation of Cade Dirkse and his over brother Jamison. Westin was the third leading scorer for the Oostburg squad, averaging 8.8 points. He also led the team in rebounds at 6.5 per game. The 6-5 forward has length for days and uses that to cause havoc on the defensive side. A big jump seems to be the next step for Westin in his upcoming junior season.

Honorable Mentions: Tanner Bergey, Jefferson; Cameron & Cornell Clark, Kingdom Prep Lutheran; Teage Cornell, Seymour; Deklyn Grzadzielewski, Arcadia; Owen Henkel, Freedom; Lavvant Johnson, Kingdom Prep Lutheran; Roman Kirchner, Aquinas; Henry Knudsen, Little Chute; Kaleb Oeth, Edgewood; Ben Petrie, Sheboygan Falls; Braden Pierce, Saint Croix Central
