We’re a little over two months out from the basketball season beginning on the boys side with the first day of practices set for Monday, November 16. As I did last year, I’ll be rolling out a pre-season all-state team for each class in each division.
Over the next few weeks we’ll roll out pre-season all-state choices, broken down into the 2027, 2028, and 2029 grades. For the senior class (2027), we will list a first team of ten athletes, a second team of five more, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the junior class (2028), we will list a first and second team, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the sophomore class (2029), we will list a first team, and then a number of honorable mentions. Number of athletes per class will vary.
The talent in the state continues to grow, so many good basketball players will be left of these lists.
Below is my preseason all-state team for the Class of 2029 in Division 5.

First Team
(listed alphabetically)
Mason Bobholz, Fall River
Bobholz had a big season with Fall River as a freshman last year, averaging 12.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game and earning Trailways-West second team all-conference honors. He’s a big reason why Fall River could take a big jump in 2026-27. At 6-7 he can dominate games, especially against smaller schools. Bobholz has great footwork for his size and soft hands while in the post. Another year of progression and Bobholz overall game will continue to grow and make him even more difficult to contain.
Sawyer Dahl, Frederic
Dahl averaged 10.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game as a freshman for Frederic last season, earning honorable mention All-Lakeland West honors. At 6-5 he’s a versatile offensive player that despite the fact he dominates inside, stepped out and buried 41 three-point shots on 36% shooting. Dahl played with the Wisconsin Playmakers club program this summer and that experience will aid him in his progression going into his sophomore season.
Sam Martin, Southwestern
Martin was a key piece for a Southwestern team that finished runner-up at the Division 5 State Tournament. As a freshman he averaged 6.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game and does not lack in confidence on the court. Martin was a contributing player as a freshman but I’d expect him to step into a much larger role for Coach Nemitz as a sophomore. He’s got good size (6-2), feel for the game, and a growing understanding of what is needed of him on the court.
Damien McCormick, North Crawford
McCormick was a key contributor for a very talented North Crawford team as a freshman a season ago. Playing as both a starter and coming off the bench he averaged 9.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game and has a lot of raw potential. McCormick stands at 6-4 but likely has a few more inches he’ll grow into. He’s long, lean, and confident in his abilities. McCormick is comfortable in the mid-range, attacking the rim, and is growing in his ability to knock down shots consistently from deep.
Lucas Mongiat, Lena
Mongiat is the top returning scorer from the Class of 2029 in Division 5 after he averaged 16.6 points per game a season ago with Lena, earning honorable mention All-Conference honors. He can get hot from deep, where he made 49 triples a season ago, but does a majority of his damage going downhill of the dribble. At 5-11 he uses his strength and athleticism to get his buckets around the rim.
Honorable Mentions: Grant Beard, Rib Lake; Evan Conrad, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah; Lucas Farley, St. Thomas Aquinas; Koy Johnson, Lake Holcombe; Wyatt Krueger, Northland Lutheran; Blake Nyhagen, Bruce; Nick Paul, Athens; Bentley Rozek, Royall; Kayden Stauffacher, Black Hawk
