We’re a little over two months out from the basketball season beginning on the boys side with the first day of practices set for Monday, November 16. As I did last year, I’ll be rolling out a pre-season all-state team for each class in each division.

Over the next few weeks we’ll roll out pre-season all-state choices, broken down into the 2027, 2028, and 2029 grades. For the senior class (2027), we will list a first team of ten athletes, a second team of five more, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the junior class (2028), we will list a first and second team, and then a number of honorable mentions. For the sophomore class (2029), we will list a first team, and then a number of honorable mentions. Number of athletes per class will vary.

The talent in the state continues to grow, so many good basketball players will be left of these lists.

Below is my preseason all-state team for the Class of 2028 in Division 5.

First Team

(listed alphabetically)

Thomas Freeman, Belmont

Freeman is one of the better big men in Division 5 in the entire state and helped lead Belmont to a conference title a season ago. At 6-7, he averaged 17.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game and was a Six Rivers-West first team honoree. The junior big man has a great touch and feel for the game. Freeman dominates around the rim, but is a willing and talented passer that also has a soft touch on his post moves. The offense can be run through Freeman in the post or mid-post which is a huge advantage for a team that is very experienced back in 2026-27.

Easton Lurvey, Three Lakes

Lurvey was an honorable mention All-State selection a season ago, the only sophomore to do so in Division 5 last season. He averaged 24.8 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game and was also named the Northern Lakes Player of the Year. Lurvey is a gym rat. He’s constantly in it improving his game, which is reflected in his output on the court. He’s surpassed 1,000 career points in his first two varsity seasons and is with his ever-evolving skillset, he will be harder to contain on the court.

McCoy Michael, Sheboygan Lutheran

Michael has been a part of two state tournament teams as an underclassmen and with the graduation of teammates the last few season, he’s primed to step into a huge role with the Crusaders as a junior. Playing alongside Oliver Leibham is a big advantage for Michael as he can play off that true point guard and find scoring lanes and openings for himself. As a sophomore he averaged 13.0 points and 3.8 assists per game and was a Big East-South second team selection. Michael has proven he can score at all three levels will only have more opportunities to showcase that this season.

Brayden Smith, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah

Smith has been one of the best shooters in the state regardless of division the past two seasons in Wisconsin. As a sophomore buried 110 triples, making 45.8% of his attempts. He’s continually adding strength and skills that aid him in his ability to effect the game in more ways. As a sophomore he averaged 21.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game and nearly has 1,000 points in his varsity career already, sitting at 970.

Wyatt Temperly, Belmont

Temperly has all the tools to succeed on the basketball court. He’s a strong athlete, has a non-stop motor, and his skillset has improved each and every year. Temperly is a competitor in every form of the word and was a first team All-Six Rivers West selection after averaging 15.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. He’s relentless to the rim and can knock down shots from deep, while also willingly hounding opposing ball handlers when he’s on defense.

Second Team

Mason Durst, Barneveld

Don’t be surprised if the 6-7 junior takes the biggest step forward of anyone in the conference this upcoming year. He sets the tone in the paint as an enforcer on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Durst was a second team all-league performer a season ago after averaging eleven points and eight rebounds per game off the bench. He’s one of the top players for a breakout season in Division 5 this year.

Blake Henderson, Rib Lake

Henderson is a 6-4 wing that can play down near the rim in the post-up or is a willing shooter from deep, having attempted 103 a season ago and making a third of those attempts. Henderson averaged 10.8 points and 7.3 rebounds on the season and shown that he has a knack for tracking down balls off missed shots.

Zach Prochnow, Reedsville

Prochnow sat behind a strong senior group that helped Reedsville win the Division 5 state championship a season ago. Now, the junior will get to step into a much larger role on the Panthers, under the tutelage of his father and head coach Ron. As a sophomore he averaged just 3.8 points per game, but showed he’s capable of a bigger role in the state tournament. In the semifinals Prochnow had 15 points on six of seven shooting in the win over Sheboygan Lutheran.

Landry Stluka, North Crawford

Stluka is a gifted athlete that has worked on his skillset to better match that as he matures. At 6-1 he can jump out of the gym and has built his frame out where he can overpower many defenders his height or even taller. Last season as a sophomore he averaged 15.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, earning second team All-Ridge & Valley honors. With the graduation of Cullen Jacobus, Stluka is primed to step into an even bigger role with the Trojans as a junior

Jaxon Tuchalski, Rio

Tuchalski was a first team All-Trailways West honoree as a sophomore a season ago. He averaged 16.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game for the Vikings doing damage from both beyond the arc and at the rim. The 6-2 forward works hard on both ends of the floor and has good instincts where it feels as if he’s always in the right position on the court.

Honorable Mentions: Carson Chrisman, Florence; Boone Havens, Belmont; Braun Jirschele, Hillsboro; Mason Knaup, Princeton/Green Lake; Jaden Konrath, Wild Rose; Lane Martin, Shullsburg; Isaac Moreland, Saint Ambrose Academy; Noah Mueller, Sheboygan Christian; Crew Rebholz, Pacelli; Joe Soper, Argyle; Caleb Ten Napel, Central Wisconsin Christian; Bradley Wendricks, Mishicot;
